If you look at the calculation I posted above he had to sell almost 5m shares just to cover the purchase costs and tax alone. He sold 6.6m shares so he converted 1.5m into a small amount of cash ($160k) for living expenses over the next few months, and increased his total shareholding by an extra 769,947 shares.

In effect he used the transaction to inject another $383,760 into the 4DS company cash pool which would otherwise simply have shifted from one shareholder to another on the market without benefitting the company. We are talking about a net difference of US$160k between the decision to sell the extra 1.5m shares versus holding them, and that assumes we have accounted for all the taxes involved, he probably has the obscene Californian property taxes, etc to deal with and I imagine at 80+ having given last 15+ years to 4DS, he doesn't have a whole lot of other income streams.

I agree, to the outsiders it is not the greatest PR look, but given the sums involved it is pretty much on the margin as he has increased his main holding at the same time. So in the absence of the other insiders doing something similar, I doubt there is much to read into this, other than it being seen as an opportunity to increase the 4DS cash pool at zero net cost to Guido. More to the point is the implication behind his decision to do that now: 4DS is not going to need it later.
