Great examples! Microsoft, which was founded back in 1972 under slightly different business conditions to the ones we have now... and better yet, Amazon. Yes, the company that was founded in 94, IPO'd in 97 and didn't make a quarterly profit until 2001 nor an annual profit in 2003. It's hard to predict the future, but you seem to be having difficulties predicting the past. Maybe ring "jeff bozos" again and check?
It's exactly Amazon's example that a lot of companies are looking to in their "burn money to grow" strategy - especially ones with marketplaces and network effects. I don't know how UPWK and FVRR will go with this but that's obviously their plan.
