I am not quite sure that the amount of shares on hand is a real issue.

One more often that invests a $ amount rather than a share amount.

What I mean by this is that we tend to think more "I want to invest $10,000" and calculate how many shares can be bought at the SP we desire rather than going the way of "I want to buy 1'000'000 shares"
