They may, or may not lead to anything useful. The patent only gives you certain rights over whatever is granted in the claims. That doesn't mean it'll work as hoped. Patent protection is important, maybe even crucial for commercial development, but it's only 1 thing and completely meaningless if the clinical trial doesn't deliver.
