I've been trying to tell people this about the entire chinese GDP thing for years, nobody seems to understand that 7% growth today is far more than 10% was 10 years ago in real $ terms.
I also like putting this scenario forward as to why %'s cannot be trusted.
At a university, 75% of students were men, 25% of students were women, is that sexist against women?
Now most people will knee-jerk reaction towards yes, without questioning the basis of the percentages.
What if I put it this way.
Class A had a class limit of 20 people, 40 people applied, 25 women and 15 men, all the participants who got in were women
Class B had a limit of 80 people, 5 women applied and got in, 100men applied and 75 got in.
Now, as a percentage only 65% of men who applied got in, while a whopping 83% of women got in.
100% of women applying for class b got accepted against 75% for the fellas, and 80% of women got into Class B while 0% for the men.
Percentages can be manipulated very easily, never let a % fool you, ask for the underlying base numbers.
