Alexicool in mattresses is definitely a winner.

As of March 10, it was reported that a run rate of 20,000 lbs per week of Alexicool chemistry was being used on 10 bedding brands.

According to this week’s 4C, as of March 31, the run rate had grown to ~35,000 lbs per week and was now being used on 12 different brands and in additional bed-lines.

As of April? It simply says that there have been “substantial increases” since March 31. If, say, the run rate were now 50,000 lbs per week, @$5 per lb, that’s $250,000 per week, just from Alexicool in mattresses.

Previously I speculated that Serta might be using Alexicool (branded as TempActiv) in its iComfort memory foam Blue mattress series, which was debuted at the Las Vegas Bedding Market in January. It seems to me that the other mattress giant, Sealy, might also be using Alexicool.

Sealy launched their new Cocoon Chill mattress in January. It’s a memory foam mattress, delivered in a box (which is kind of cool in itself). The Cocoon Chill mattress is said to feature an “innovative cooling technology” in the form of a “cool to the touch” phase change material which is infused in a removable, washable knit cover. Sealy offers the PCM cover as an optional addition to its Cocoon brand mattress for an extra $150.

According to one online review, it’s worth it.

With respect to cooling the Cocoon does a pretty good job. The Cocoon Chill definitely has a leg up on the regular version of the Cocoon by Sealy and for the majority of sleepers I think it’s worth spending the extra $150 to get the cooler cover.
