the best justification my trader friends offer me for why I should use stop-losses is not necessarily to use them as automatic sells (though they frequently do) and sell without thinking, but to force me to re-assess my original thesis. Ie, if my thesis was right, how come it is not turning out how I expected. Like Churchill's quote "However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results". Maybe the thesis remains intact - and I should continue to hold, but it should prompt me to reconsider as I may have assessed it wrongly. That seems closer to your fundamental milestones idea, than just trading for the sake of it. Though you pose the ZNT fundamental milestones as reasons why you would definitely sell - I'm certain that reflects your assessment of the specific situation of ZNT (lack of track record, execution risk, acquisition trickery being used to hide underlying performance issues, etc) rather than being a product of your overall philosophy.
