AXE is taking a pulse level quantum system approach as opposed to a gate-level system. Electronic control pulses precisely nudge the qubit to a particular state. Done by adjusting the Hamiltonian, or total energy state of the qubit. So rather than manufacturing gates, AXE is generating accurate control pulses to manipulate qubit states. Engineering this is a high precision task and when done, should make available a more accurate, high probability state of the measured qubit....and therefore a more accurate computational result.
The last announcement about high qubit coherence times at which it maintains a state long enough it gives them more time to achieve the precision pulse level control. More time, as in ability to do calculations and measure quantum states in real time.
There is no other team out there that I'm aware of, that is aiming to do high precision pulse level quantum systems at coherence times no one has achieved at room temperature. IMO, it's impossible to find any other quantum computing product that we can compare AXE with on any metric. This is pioneering work and carries risks in so far as no one has done this before.
