Having done Kumon as a child and tutored as a university student the biggest difference is that Kumon is not at all aligned with the Australian curriculum - it is focussed much more strongly on the Japanese style of teaching which is much more "rote" style learning through repetition.

It has limited utility when measured against the ACARA (Australian national curriculum) standards and the philosophy that underpins it. So it's really apples and oranges, KME is (generally) providing teachers with experience in Australian classrooms and curriculum teaching applicable concepts.
