Why would it not be acceptable? If EPS is rising then all shareholders benefit. It's the absolute best metric to use for this kind of thing. Other metrics like Revenue or even NPAT (not tied to share count) can be gamed without shareholder actually benefitting on a per share basis. If they get there via buybacks then good on them.
Painting it as some sort of conspiracy is weird. Serious investors and instos in this stock are all in favour of the buyback as it's an excellent use of capital in circumstances where there is excess cash and the underlying earnings multiple is very low.
