It continues to happen day in, day out. I have seen six cases this week alone for the stocks I follow.
Yes, it's due to financial illiteracy - but doesn't excuse the behaviour of the company accepting the funds.
It's obvious those exercising the options are small retail holders, who have no idea about the concept of options.
It could be a simple advisement from the registry stating it is advisable to buy on market - when they receive the notice to exercise.
It's almost as egregious as DRP policies that reinvest at NAV when they share price is sitting at a 20% discount.
