This post from Rembrandt (who is on my respected favourites list from way back) is very appropriate.
YES - I would spend $500 to protect my family 'just in case' and that is exactly what I and thousands of others have done. Now the companies MUST get more stock out there ASAP.
Who's going to sit around and wonder whether their family will just be left to die because there's only enough stock for 'essential services' like airport and health workers.
On my list - my family are 'essential' and most of the world feels the same.
Get manufacturing - faster!

... the problemo is that anti-virals are the go coz there is currently no vaccine for avian flu but the race is on with Abbott recently funding CSL human trials of a vaccine that could be available in late 2006.

It seems both Roche and GSK are playing it safe and only gearing for sales from Govt agencies ... chemists are already 'out of stock' with scripts on waiting lists.

If the Govt was smart they would take antivirals off the prescriptive list and let folks create an instant market that would drive the production cycle ... would I invest $500 now to protect my family against an avian flu pandemic ... you bettcha I would.

Whatever happens, there is potentially more than a billion doses of antivirals/vaccine down the path for whoever can get it right.
