I live in Wanaka, just up the road from the mine site, and I am not averse to the mine. OC is cheapest but some UG would be ok providing it doesnt increase the mining cost too much. Re the environment, the area where the mine will be is a desolate, rocky landscape, and there is plenty more of that type of landscape in the area. To have complaints from Winery owners and orchard farmers is a bit rich, given the environmental damage they do with their fertilisers and pesticides. If the area where the mine is going was in the centre of a totally untouched area of Otago, with no development anywhere around it, I would be against OC mining........but this area has grazing and vines as far as the eye can see-cherry picking (pun intended) what type of development can scar the landscape is a bit rich when farming and fruit orchards and wineries have already scarred the original landscape.
