When the KLL NAIF deal was announced I was surprised the Federal government was prepared fund items that were clearly not pieces of infrastructure benefiting the wider Australian population. What is at Beyondie that benefits the local or wider community? The airstrip may be beneficial to the RFDS.
Of course you may think that jobs, royalties and tax revenue benefit the wider community but given the small number of NAIF loans that had been granted back when KLL was awarded the loan, the loan to KLL now looks to have been highly speculative and irresponsible. Certainly far too risky to be funding infrastructure that primarily benefitted KLL shareholders.
Compare this to some of the other potential WA SOP projects that are far more isolated. NAIF funding for these projects would genuinely improve access to the centre of Australia. It is unfortunate that SO4 & KLL have not only killed investor confidence in the sector, they have probably ruined potential funding for other WA SOP projects.
I suspect the board at NAIF had as much understanding of producing SOP as the board at KLL. NAIF probably only looked at the financials. To be frank, I think NAIF should have stopped funding long ago.
