Brian Epstein had never managed a band before he approached and took over the Beatles... you don't need to have held a position previously to excel in a position (noting while Epstein made some awful decisions as manager, end result was pretty incredible).
If the only way to be the right fit for a position was to have held it before, no one could ever get a position.
Give the guy a chance, and judge on results achieved rather than pre-judge based on perceived notoriety or lack thereof.
