We also now have around 65% of our sales base under investigation by the anti-dumping commission for unfair trade, and we are continuing to assess whether other applications are appropriate.
With record steel exports coming out of China resulting in historic low South East Asian steel margins, the risk of unfair trade in Australia from imports is high. This reinforces more than ever the need for our anti-dumping regime to be strong and effective.
While there have been some improvements over the last year or two, more needs to be done, and done
quickly, as we still lag behind other countries in terms of effectiveness. For example, we are seeing imports now finding ways to circumvent measures imposed on them for dumping. This needs to be addressed urgently as it seriously threatens the effectiveness of our system.
Needless to say, it is also critical that any free trade agreement the Government may negotiate does not result in any weakening of our anti-dumping regime, whether directly or indirectly. Indeed, we believe that a robust anti-dumping regime can only build strength and integrity into a free trade environment.
