OK, but selling is easy. the hard part is knowing when to get back in, as retracements are often not as deep as one would like. Events like the 1987 and 2008 crashes don't happen too often, so there's no point trying to time the market before those sorts of events happen. There's an old saying that more money has been lost by waiting for the bear market than the actual bear market ( probably not entirely true but it serves a point )
