Instead of continuous core that you get with DD, you get rock chips back to the surface. Crews arrange those by range of depths. You calculate that by circulation time required to lift the cuttings from the bottom of the hole, it’s called bottoms up. Much cheaper (rig rates, water usage, duration etc) and faster method than DD. They’ll absolutely know if they hit MS by examining rock chips.
