Ryman Healthcare buys second site in Melbourne

Brandon Park Secondary College site to be redeveloped into a Ryman retirement
    village

Ryman Healthcare is planning to build its second retirement village in
Melbourne after buying a new site in the eastern suburbs.

The 5.5 hectare property was formerly the home of the Brandon Park Secondary
College. The school closed down a decade ago and the site has been purchased
from the Victorian Government as part of its surplus land sales programme.

"It's a site we've had our eye on for a number of years,'' Ryman Healthcare
    Managing Director Simon Challies said.

"We're delighted to have secured it.''

Ryman is planning to build a retirement village which will be home to about
400 residents. It will include residential aged care amenities for high and
low care residents, and secure dementia care.

Other amenities will include a swimming pool, a bowling green, cinema,
hairdressing salon, movie theatre, and a chapel and will cost in excess of
    $100 million to build.

Ryman Healthcare has been in business for 30 years in New Zealand, and opened
its first Melbourne retirement village at Wheelers Hill earlier this year.
The village is named in honour of Victorian Weary Dunlop, the great
    Australian war hero.

Mr Challies said census data showed there were more than 17,000 people aged
over 65 in the suburbs around Brandon Park.

"We aim to provide retired residents with a place to live in an area they
love, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing they will be looked after
no matter how their health needs change over time.''

"It will also create jobs and free up a lot of housing in the area for resale
    - which is likely to be good news for the local economy as well as families
looking to buy in or move in this sought after area.''

Mr Challies said the site was not only close to well-established residential
areas it was also close to the Brandon Park shopping centre and the local
    medical centre.

The site is bordered by Brandon Park Drive, Collegium Ave, Strada Crescent
    and Academy Avenue.

Ryman will design, build and operate the new village. At this point there are
no estimated dates for when planning permission will be sought or when work
    will start.

About Ryman: Ryman Healthcare was founded in Christchurch in 1984 and owns
and operates 27 retirement villages in New Zealand and Australia. Ryman
villages are home to 7500 residents, and the company employs 3500 staff.
