VMWare products are basically all based on virtualisation requirements. That is, the software that allows physical hardware to host one or many virtual severs/applications. They've extended into things like containerisation/serverless, 5G, etc, but at the core they're all about virtualising your environment.
Using this for a thin client is done, but it's not the main purpose. More likely this will be used by large enterprise to host on-premise virtual environments, monitor the entire fleet of servers, virtualise and secure a network, assign resourcing between physical and virtual layers, convert virtual images to/from certain formats and so on. It is also used by larger orgs to integrate on premise environments to public cloud offering (AWS, Azure, GCP, and the list goes on).
(I say large orgs because they're the ones most likely to have hybrid environments with hundreds or thousands of virtual servers to monitor and maintain)

The entire catalogue is software, yes (unless I'm missing a hardware product somewhere?). It's usually purchased as an annual license (in my experience), and can be purchased direct from VMWare if required. However, the benefit of going through DDR is the technical expertise (very much needed in this case) and having a single invoice for IT spend.
As for distributors: my understanding is DDR and Ingram are appointed disties for the entire product suite, plus Rhipe and Westcon as part of the VMWare Cloud Provider Program (VCPP). I'm unsure which products are in or out of the VCPP, but it's a subset of the entire range.
