Assume the average size of each pearl is 0.6 momme
37000 pearls in 2012 at today's prices for arguments sake,
37000 * 0.6 is 22200 momme
@10700 momme is JPY 237,540,000 AUD 2.4 million approx
64000 pearls from recent auction
64000 * 0.6 is 38400 momme
@10700 momme is JPY 410,880,000. AUD 4.3 million approx
One can assume there is a problem with the calculations or the pearls auctioned were very small at about 0.35 momme average per pearl. A 10mm pearl is approx 0.4-0.5 momme in the round near round category.
Now let's say using JPY 6000/momme
64000 * 0.6 * JPY6000/momme would be JPY 230,400,000 AUD 2.4 million approx, which is much closer to the money.
