    Yes. The cost base of the MLX shares held at the time of the demerger has been reduced by 1.41479. For every 36.29 MLX shares shareholder got 1 Nico share.

    So the new cost base of MLX shares is the purchase price minus 1.41479. And the cost base of the NICO shares held at the time of the demerger is 51.3437 (ie 36.29 times 1.41479).

    This is equivalent to a shareholder being no better or worse off in terms of their cost base after the demerger than before it, except that the NICO shares need to be held for 12 months before they get the 50% capital gains tax reduction.

    I flogged most of my NICO shares off because I thought the price was too high even though I have to pay the higher rate of capital gains.
