AZJ has two locomotives (probably without wagons, so in rail terminology in Oz referred to as 'light engines' or 'light locomotives') at Wilban on the Nullarbor (in the middle of nowhere!) on a training trip from Port Augusta, South Australia's Spencer Junction all the way to Parkeston, Western Australia (the major goldmining city of Kalgoorlie).
This is a good sign as it suggests AZJ has been successful in recruiting some new drivers for its eventually planned five return intermodal trains per week from the east coast to and from Perth, WA.
On many Western rail networks internationally, drivers must have and retain 'route knowledge' by driving on a particular railway at least once every six months or similar period. This is so that they have a better chance of remembering quirks such as where signals are placed, how crossing loops operate, permanent speed restrictions and momentum grades allowing trains to save on fuel by the railway equivalent of coasting.
