From 21 April 2024, AZJ looks to be increasing its Melbourne to Port Augusta, South Australia container trains from three to four per week. I haven't checked the timetables fully, but one of these four may be combined with the still only sole weekly train from Sydney to Port Augusta. All these trains end up in Perth.

A couple of trains from Melbourne this week had respectively 89 and 70 wagons - quite healthy - but a third was far shorter. I lack information as to how many wagons were devoid of containers.

Some may wonder why there's such a discrepancy between AZJ's trains from Glenlee (southwest Sydney) compared to those ex Victoria Dock in Melbourne. The latter city dominates food manufacturing so AZJ plus competitors Pacific National and SCT operate more container trains from the Victorian capital than from Sydney. It probably also assists that Melbourne is closer to Perth than Sydney, as this at least slightly lowers freight costs irrespective of mode.
