Think of your favourite Uber/Didi driver, chauffeur or taxi driver: sometimes they have to travel multiple kilometres empty for the nextjob.
The same applies to road and rail freight operators. Furniture removalists would be a classic case, as far more move from Melbourne or Sydney to the Gold Coast than in reverse.
However AZJ seems to not be doing well with its now twice weekly each way Melbourne-Sydney-Brisbane container trains, with the video below showing only about 18 x 12.2 metre (double length) containers on board from Sydney to Brisbane.
The lack of loading from Team Global Express is a concern, because AZJ said on average its interstate intermodal trains would be 70 per cent 'full' of container freight from Team GE. I do however get the impression TGE may be on a 'take or pay' arrangement but would appreciate if someone could confirm.
Perhaps there was simply an imbalance of traffic requiring wagons to be hauled empty to Brisbane for loading coming back, but this isn't the first time we've seen poorly loaded south to north AZJ Trains:
