Coastal shipping between Sydney/Melbourne and Perth is far less than in 2019.
Since COVID-19, these exclusively foreign-flagged container shipping lines have reduced transcontinental Australian voyages.
Sea freight is subject to many more delays, typically, than rail. For instance, consignors have to lodge containers at ports days before a ship is due to sail, and then the vessel may, or may not be, on time.
Sea freight may often be cheaper than rail but the disadvantages are many.
