The initial second weekly frequency AZJ intermodal train from Melbourne to Perth arrived Kalgoorlie, WA at 0921 hours local time on Thursday 20 July, 564 minutes (i.e. 9 hrs 24 mins) early. It looks to be stabled as it may have to wait for an available train path through to Kwinana, but more likely the crew don't sign on until tonight.
I've yet to see a video but this second weekly train had 79 wagons/platforms when it passed through Victoria. AZJ has mentioned '1300 metre' (long) trains, whereas the maximum length permitted on the east-west national standard gauge rail network is normally 1800 metres, as that's the limit of many crossing loops. The length of each wagon or permanently coupled '5-pack' platforms varies, but 79 wagons is less than 1800 metres.
Irrespective, 79 is a decent size, and similar to what the first weekly train across what can be the windy (and occasionally, though counterintuitive, flooded) Nullarbor has been conveying.
