On Tuesday 25 July 2023 just before 0900 AEST, AZJ locomotive 3215 is operating train number D656 south through Coffs Habour on the Sydney to Brisbane line.

It's a light engine (a locomotive by itself).

For the past week, it's been operating up and down this main line with its hundreds of curves, built as it was in the steam age, training drivers.

It's a safety requirement that they have route knowledge - know where all the signals are, permanent speed restrictions around curves, where to operate freight trains using momentum grades to reduce fuel consumption, the track layout of all stations and crossing loops, where to whistle in advance of every level crossing and numerous other factors.

This suggests the commencement of AZJ's twice weekly each way Melbourne to Brisbane intermodals is not far off, but I lack confirmation.
