I just read an artical about the current outbreak of Ebola in the DRC.  Turns out the affected areas are mainly in the North East, a region mainly rich in Gold, but under constant armed conflict.  After checking out a few maps I discovered the DRC’s Cobalt and Copper fields are located in the South of the country near the boarder with Zambia.  Most of the world’s Cobalt (about 66,000 MT) is currently mined in the DRC, Australia mines a tiny amount in comparrison (about 5,100 MT) per year.  It’s actually quite unbeleiveable they can export anywhere near these kinds of volumes considering how bad their infrastructure is and how politically unstable they are.  The following link helps to explain how such a miraculous achievement is able to be pulled off by one of the poorest countries on the planet.
