While smoking cannabis has a quite fast onset of action, there is a delayed effect from consuming cannabis edibles. Typically, it takes from 1 to 2 hours for effects to be felt as the active stays safely within the edible until the body begins to digest it.
This delayed onset effect from cannabis edibles can cause someone to consume more than they should, mistakenly thinking that the dose they took was too low. Another potential “catch” in consuming edibles is that when the body metabolizes the cannabis, the liver breaks it down into several byproducts, including 11-hydroxy-THC, which can have an even stronger effect than THC itself.
Unintentional overconsumption of cannabis edibles can lead to unpleasant and long-lasting side effects. And even for consumers who get the dose right, a commonly expressed complaint is that the edible takes too long to exert an effect and the effects can last too long (perhaps 8 hours).
But, on the other hand, a lot of people prefer cannabis gummies. They’re discreet, easy to transport, taste good and don’t involve smoking or vaping.
For these reasons, manufacturers have sought solutions to make cannabis edibles with a faster onset, a shorter duration and avoidance of the 11-Hydroxy effect.
Companies such as Wana Brands (acquired in November by Canopy Growth for US$300m) have recently introduced nano-formulation products to their edibles range. Wana packs with 2 gummies containing 5mg of THC each retail for CAD$9 at the Ontario Cannabis Store. Stiiizy sells packs of 3 gummies, each with 30mg THC,but promotes the fact that the gummies can be easily divided into 3 pieces. These retail for around US$15. Kanha sells packs of 10 gummies, each with 10mg of THC, for ~US$20.
I note with interest that the Big Chief website has just added three new ”Nano cannabis infused” gummy products which are said to be “Coming soon”. The packets contain 10 gummies, each containing 10mg of active. No other details or prices are provided at this stage.
