"never" is a big term, but tend to agree we are a long way off replacing fossil fuels in haulage and aviation.
Using remaining fossil fuels to mine vanadium, to make VFBs, to accompany wind and solar seems like a good use of these fossil fuels. The alternative is we burn through all the oil and gas in the next ~100 or so years and have nothing to show for it on the other side.
