If you don't do the FEED you won't build anything. It gives the ultimate level of certainty of cost and timeframes before project begins.

Perhaps someone in the mining industry that has participated in a FEED phase could provide more detail here?

FEED stands for Front End Engineering and Design. It's the most important phase of a project and the key deliverable is a class 3 estimate giving the client assurity of cost and schedule with contingencies to enable them to move to Final Investment Decision (FID).
