I also used to own SYR, but sold based on trend breakdown. SYR being one of the most shorted stocks does not help in regards to sentiment. Traders who short SYR (presumably) use at least basic chart analysis to time their entries and exits.
Stocks in general (especially mining stocks) are not for putting away in the proverbial draw and checking infrequently. Significant destruction of trading capital is a reality for anyone buying a speculative investment. Large position sizes, e.g. buying nominal $100,000 worth of SYR at $4.80, would be now worth only $68,333 based on last Friday's close price. A large position size share purchase with no stop loss exit point, often results in a large capital loss. To buy SYR back on Jan 3, 2018 at $4.80 was correct from a trend-following perspective. The longer and shorter moving averages were up, hence the trend over all time-frames were up. According to my chart software, $4.40 was indicated as the capital protect exit point. This would still result in a $8,333 capital loss, but is better than losing $31,667.
Smaller position sizes reduce risk. Often at least 50% of stock trades fail and eventually turn into a loss. The failure rate is even higher in bear markets. Sensible position size coupled with a stop loss will save a trader from experiencing catastrophic losses. Even losing everything due to the company being permanently suspended from quotation, will not be in the catastrophic loss category providing position size is no more than roughly 10% to 15% of total trading capital.
The trend for SYR is still down. It is trading below a declining 100-day moving average. When zooming out the chart to show 10 years of data, price action below a declining 100-day MA most often leads to further declines.
A trader is generally more profitable by using a simple moving average crossover buy and sell system, especially for stocks such as SYR that combine high volatility with trending behaviour.
Assuming that the fundamentals are still positive, can distract a trader from acting on a chart stop loss. The news appears to be improving, but the price continues to fall hard. The social interaction on HC often only serves to reinforce that company fundamentals and news reports will eventually stop the share from falling further. Meanwhile price never lies, but fundamentals often do.
Fundamental data can be useful for narrowing down which stocks to first buy. But once the stock is purchased, fundamental data should take second place to capital preservation.
The first signal for shorts to close out their positions is if SYR manages to close above circa $4.48. Until then, they should be still holding.
