I think the grant was a huge win for AVL, and demonstrates government support for the V industry and green battery sector, so i'm a big fan of Vince putting in the work to get the grant and some recognition for what he is trying to build here...
For the sake of new and potential holders though, I think it is detrimental or a bit misleading how it keeps getting summized as 'government picked AVL' = 'AVL must be the best/most advanced vanadium play'.

Vince himself did a great job of explaining it, so anyone wanting clarification, watch his recent interview with 180.

The government was offering grants and would be looking for companies that meet/can meet certain criteria. Vince felt their company would tick a lot of the boxes, so they put $150k and a lot of work into a submission, and the government granted it.

Again this is a huge win for AVL personally, and for the vanadium industry as a whole. We don't know yet what criteria or milestones the grant is based on, but on AVL's side, you can probably speculate they may be the only V play that could meet these criteria and goals ('green' targets etc), so that is a boon to Vince and you can also speculate AVL is the pick of resource companies that most closely meet what the government is looking for...

Where the misinterpretation is coming in though, I feel, is assuming the grant says (proves) anything specific about AVL's vanadium mine (potential) vs any other company. The government wasn't searching for the best 'investment' like we search for an investment.
The governement wasn't searching for the best V company and 'picked' AVL over all others based on their fundamentals, or on their perceived ability to be mining before others.
These factors may have actually been zero consideration. So I feel it's misleading to keep connecting the grant equalling the project being the most favourable.

Mostly we have zero idea what criteria the grant is based on, but i'm excited to have those details released, as like I said this is great for the industry and depending on what they are, Vince has done a great job...
But until anyone knows what the grant was awarded based on, the speculation is just that..

Anyway, not sour grapes, i'd ask the same if I held AVL or if the grant was awarded elsewhere.

And asking these questions or wanting things clarified before making assumptions takes nothing away from AVL. Clearly Vince has repeatedly won support from the government, and anything like that can definitely contribute to a company's success... And IMO does help support a decision to put one's own money behind AVL as well...
