That has always been my understanding. I believe MT has stated this himself in interviews, possibly The Limiting Factor?
The plan for batteries going forward is to use less and less synthetic (not remove it entirely) and increase the natural stuff - in fact the ANN also states this: "...there is a transition underway to natural-dominant blends."
Then depending on specific performance requirements and pricepoint of the car, we will see small amounts of silicon thrown in too.
