True story
In Ireland prior to the great famine of the mid 1840's, (there were 6 other less well documented famines between the 1798 rebellion and the great famine) due to the economic subjugation of the population and keeping them as suppressed in a state of poverty as possible; starvation was in fact a yearly event, from the end of the previous harvest running out to the reaping fo the next, the mass rural population was in a state of famine for about 3 months of the year .. every year, they basically lay down a lot, kept their energy output a slow as possible to survive those months each year.
