Harbour are managing institutional mandates ie on behalf of super funds, they are not buying stock to short it, that is just dumb thinking as it is a negative sum game for them given there is a cost of borrow which can be more than 8pc when there is limited stock to borrow.

The main stock borrow comes from when index funds invest as they try to enhance returns from the money they make lending stock. In theory if they are at index weight with the stock they don't really care if the stock goes up or down so are happy to lend it even though this means it will be shorted.

In the case of harbour etc they may manage funds on behalf of other institutions who in some case allow their stock to be lent out. Harbour has no real control over that as they don't own the stock per se. However from time to time the fund manager may request them to stop lending their stock out.

So all these instos you see buying the stock are not trying to manipulate the price it simply means more stock is likely to be available to short.

Let them short. You'd be surprised how unintelligent and ill informed some shorters are. They would simply see bellamys is in the toilet and ask brokers to short all similar comps in the hope there is contagion. And that would be the extend of their analysis.

If you are playing the long game like me, I'm not fussed they will get burnt. They have been burnt already in this and they will be burnt again. The more that is short the more that will need to be covered. They have been let out a jail with bellamys creating fear but that won't last long.

Well at last some sense. You're right I haven't got a clue when it comes to shorting stocks. Thats a very informative post and greatly appreciated and I trust your right. That doesn't change my opinion that the share price could take a tumble when Bellamys realist.
But I'll take onboard your explanation on short selling. Thanks.
