    Roughead's treating oncologist Grant McArthur said he had undergone immunotherapy treatment, which was different from the more traditional chemotherapy, and turned on the body's own immune system to fight melanoma.
    He said Roughead had some severe side-effects, which had an impact on his eyes, lungs and liver.
    "With that great fighting spirit, that champion quality he has an athlete, he was able to get through all of that," McArthur said.
    The immunotherapy treatment was quite new, so researchers were still learning about how long it lasted, but the early signs were good.
    "We're really very optimistic we're going to achieve long-term responses to these therapies," McArthur said. "Jarryd should look forward to getting on with life and certainly from a cancer specialist's perspective, Jarryd's got the all-clear to return to AFL footy."
    Roughead was at pains to point out that while the drug treatment worked for him all people reacted differently and it did not mean the drugs would work for everyone.
