Nice that you enjoy the good old customercentric style of banking that BEN tend to present. My feeling is that that style is retained mainly because they do value their communities. I must agree that in general the population are not valuing the community style - until - something tragic or devastating such as a bushfire wipes out much of their landscape or a highly infectious or contagious disease surfaces in their midst and then the community spirit seems to gel and as the media says "the good old Aussie battlers" gather and help out their neighbors and mates. And as you have seen the banks have largely done the same and so have most businesses where they can. I do not want to tear down your argument that people do not care about the bank having community values because they seem somewhat apathetic towards it - until...........................the chips are down.
