I don't need to back-up anything mate. normally short fund goes up when market is in bear state while long fund goes down at the same time. you also observe reversal of this when market goes to bull... IMO... there is nothing to back-up.... i am sure there are some funds who may not move this way but those are exceptional... IMO.
