as controversial as it may sound to long traders that never go short, I have no qualms with shorters. they are an important part of the concept of a free market. if everyone was betting long, the whole market would blow up.
a simple way to put it would be to ask yourself if you have any kind of insurance? if you do, then you are betting on something going wrong or losing you money(i.e. the value of something going down).
same thing on stocks, especially in the speculative market.
using short positions to manipulate the market is no worse than using long positions to manipulate the market in my view. but market manipulation is another thing altogether.
