"Research on gambling shows that a person is much more confident of a horse they have backed once they have laid a bet for this very same reason, for as to think otherwise would be inconsistent with their previous hypothesis. A persons whose beliefs words and deeds don’t match could be seen as indecisive, confused or two faced". This appears to me to be an example of a combination of cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias.
