From today's Fin Review
Net zero needs a lot more metal
Jeremy Weir
To benefit from a generation shift in commodities, Australia needs to identify the strategic minerals, streamline approvals of new mines, and target investments in processing.
On the journey to net zero emissions, the world is going to need a lot more metal and minerals.
Australia has a unique opportunity to benefit from a generational shift in commodities demand, while at the same time supporting the stability of domestic and global supply.
Decarbonising the global power mix – one of the most impactful things we can do to reduce emissions – is not going to happen without a huge increase in wind and solar power and by extension a huge increase in the metals needed to produce them: a list that includes aluminium, copper and zinc.
But we should be under no illusions: this is an enormous challenge.
