The shorting phenomenon reminds me a lot of the great wildebeest trek crossing the Mara river in the Serengeti. The wildebeest are obviously a lot like the large numbers of 'ordinary' investors, all of the little mums and dads who put what they can afford into stocks with promise, and who collectively finance the companies that end up becoming successful businesses (like we expect WBT to become eventually). It's also obvious who the crocs are - their entire parasitic existence being dependent on being able to gorge on the "hard working" wildebeest as they follow the rains and the grass it produces - green or economic. The crocs are the parasites to be sure, the bad guys who justify their existence and practices under the guise of "don't blame us for making a profit where one is available, we're only doing this for the market's good, we're on your side really". But it's the owners of the parking spots along the river, the ones that the crocs pay their rents to, the big funds who own the bulk of the shares along the corporate riverbanks if you like. They are the ones who reap the biggest profits without having to get any obvious blood on their hands. They do this by renting out their shares to the crocs, and getting them back, with a fee, while also being able to buy more at lower than market prices. These are the ones I hold responsible. It's the way the system is set up that is the problem. One thing is for sure. It will not be until the wildebeest all get together and do something to break the system as it is that there will be fewer crocs!
