the synoil gets split into light and heavy fractions.
the light oils (would normally be processed into gasoline) can be used to power the Alpha plant/site (this can significantly reduce opex)
and the heavy oils go into bitumen production.
So a big part of the refining the process for Alpha is to maximise recovery of the heavy oils (lowest APIs) because that'll make bitumen production easier.
