Mining revenue is a big deal for Sweden. Local jobs in that part of Sweden are fairly tight. The unemployment rate for Norrbotten (that area of Sweden) is 6.0%, which is lower than the average of 8.2% for the whole of Sweden. Vittangi is a pretty small village of 784 residents, and one main shopping spot- the Co-Op.I'd say they could use the extra income from the work-force that will come into the town to shop and eat and probably stay. My guess is that the Talga mine will actual help the town in many ways. Talga just needs to convince the locals that it will stick to its strict environmental plans. That will be an important step. There is a percentage of the local populace who are not so keen on the mine. Needs work to allay their concerns. Very beautiful natural area, with many pristine waterways. It's easy to see why they get worried- but it's not really necessary with such a small mine like this.

Now is the time for Talga to be continuing to talk more with the locals, and answer their questions. Not easy, but needs to be done. Better before the decision than afterwards.






The Talga mine is at Nunesvaara, near the Thorne and the Vittangi rivers. Kiruna ( an iron ore mining town) is the nearest large town.
