There is no requirement. It is based on rankings of free-float market cap. I think the threshold is 179th or better for its 6-month average free float market cap amongst eligible securities (so things like ETFs and LICs are not permitted, also things with very limited free-float are not eligible such as GYG which is under 20% of its shares actually free floating at the moment). The methodology docs are on the S&P website. You can pull down something close to the current constituent list for the 300 (approximately) by looking at the vanguard site and following your nose to its Aussie ETF bit. The list on marketindex is not accurate (and they say so on the site).
