They are not shorting the stock. They are loaning it to shorters who are shorting it. Yes they help to enable shorters but there is a clear difference. .
shorts have grown from 8.0% to 9.2 % in last 30 days. June 11 - July10. shorting has very high risk. And has very high fees. I wounder why people see an opportunity in shorting. They do not do it to drive stock down! They do it because they think they can make money even after paying the fees.
JP and state st. Both buy stock to loan to shorters. The fees for loaning for shorting are far richer than most activities for investment banks.
