Lets look at it from the opposite point of view. When you buy a stock do you do it hoping to force up the stock? Or do you buy it because your research indicates it is going up? Then buy it to make profit on that upward momentum. Shorter's intent is no different than yours just they have the opposite view of where the stock is going.

So they do note hope to drive down stock! They just believe it will go down. Just the same as your holding is because you think it is going up. I am sure you are not holding to drive stock up.
