Sorry Tuts I know many of these institutions on the State Street announcement and they have been investing internationally since the 80's they are long only funds and their decisions are research based. This is what the retail investors in Mesoblast need to see. In todays announcement long only funds own around 4% of Mesoblast.
As regards shorting most of the short positions would be held by the prime brokers on behalf of hedge funds. Prime brokers are a division within most of the investment banks. JP Morgans announcements for example include a large element of shorting.
